What is Pilates and what can it do for you?

Anna McBain, EFS Pilates instructor

As a Pilates instructor, I am often asked, “What is Pilates?” Formally, I might answer this question as follows: Pilates is a mind and body exercise system originally created by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s which strengthens and lengthens muscles while emphasizing body awareness, spinal mobility and deep core stability. Other benefits include improvement in body alignment, range of motion, circulation and balance. Whether working on the Mat using just your body weight as resistance or on the spring-based equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, or Wunda Chair, all exercises provide the opportunity to gain flexibility, strength and a better connection with your body. In a more informal manner, I would say that Pilates is an exercise system that can changed how you move through your daily life as well as how you approach all other forms of exercise.
